Biodiversity Week 2026 | River Water Quality Assessment on the River Erkina

May 21 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Nore Vision to explore the health of the River Erkina.

The River Erkina is part of the River Nore catchment, which is nationally and internationally important for the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera), one of Ireland’s most endangered species.

Discover how insects and other small river creatures act as natural indicators of pollution and river health, and see how simple surveys can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface.

Freshwater pearl mussels have very particular habitat requirements, needing clean, fast‑flowing rivers with stable gravel and cobble beds, very low levels of fine sediment, and excellent water quality.
As a tributary of the Nore, the River Erkina contributes water, sediment, and nutrients downstream, meaning its condition directly influences the suitability of pearl mussel habitat further along the catchment.
