May 17 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free guided woodland walk for Biodiversity Week: explore ancient trees, wildlife and folklore with the Native Woodland Trust in Ballinakelly

🌳 Native Woodland Wander

Guided Woodland Walk for Biodiversity Week

Celebrate National Biodiversity Week 2026 with a guided walk through one of Ireland’s most precious native woodlands. Join the Native Woodland Trust for a family‑friendly wander through Ballinakelly Wood, Burton Hall, Co. Carlow — a place rich in wildlife, history and folklore.

Led by Aaron Gallagher, this relaxed walk follows ancient woodland paths, passing historic structures and veteran trees — some of the oldest in Ireland. Along the way, we’ll explore the plants and animals that depend on these old woodlands and hear the stories and folklore woven through the landscape.

After the walk, participants are welcome to carpool back to Duckett’s Grove for tea, coffee and a chat.

🌿 What you’ll explore

  • Native trees, plants and woodland wildlife
  • The importance of old woodlands for biodiversity
  • Folklore and stories connected to the landscape
  • How native woodlands are protected and restored and how a local branch of volunteers are contributing at Ballinakelly Wood
