SUMMARY:The Grove Donnybrook Botanical Walk and Photographic Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Grove will be open all afternoon from 2pm for visitors to enjoy this green oasis in the heart of the city. Botanist Catriona Brady will lead a guided walk of the plants of the Grove. Those on the photographic cyanotype workshop an collect samples. The workshop must be booked through Eventbrite as places are limited and aged over 14 years. At 3pm the cyanotype workshop  will begin with Visual Artist Sarah Louise Lordan. Photographic cyanotypes were first used in the early 19th century by botanist Anna Atkins. Anna merged scientific accuracy and artistic beauty in pioneering photograms that documented botanical specimens.  She self published the first book of photographic illustrations of algae.  Attendees will use photograms\, the technique of creating photographic prints without a camera is as old as photography itself.  This is a free unique event please book on Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk\, Irvinestown
DESCRIPTION:The Farrelly farm is a sheep enterprise nestled in the Fermanagh Lakeland’s\, working in harmony with livestock and nature. On the Farm\, you will see examples of Fred’s farmer-led innovative method of tree protection. Having previously struggled with using conventional protection\, he has successfully developed a simple\, more effective solution\, using electric fencing\, which has gained significant interest from a variety of farmers and tree planting organisations. \nTo enhance the farm’s long-term sustainability\, numerous trees have been planted to replace those lost due to storm damage or disease\, with additional trees introduced into fields. These trees provide valuable sources of pollen and nectar\, offer shade and shelter for livestock\, and increase future timber potential. The farm also features internal hedgerows\, established through laying and coppicing over 25 years ago\, which have been left to develop naturally\, creating a rich biodiverse landscape. \nWildlife is actively supported; bird boxes are integrated into farm buildings\, and bats are frequently observed at dusk. A riparian buffer zone was established many years ago to improve water quality and habitat\, resulting in the development of a rough grass margin. Furthermore\, double fencing along perimeter farm boundaries enhances biosecurity\, and the vegetation that has developed between the fences now provides additional habitat for wildlife. \nWhile this is a free event\, please register before as attendance is limited. \nRegister at: https://www.irishagroforestry.ie/farm-walks

DESCRIPTION:Change to start time to 2.30pm!The Irish Uplands Forum are hosting a Trip to Tipp\, a National Biodiversity Week event in the form of a tour of a Hill farm in (Hennessy’s Farm) Monour\, County Tipperary. Eircode: E34R624.\nIt will now take place on Saturday 23rd May from 2.30pm.\nMonour is a few kilometres south of Tipperary Town. The farm is situated on a low ridge which is essentially an outlier of the Galtee Mountains. The focus of the field visit is the Special Area of Conservation which covers part of the farm. SAC number 002257.\nThe walk will be led by farm owners and their cousin\, the ecologist Dr Mary Tubridy. The principal focus of this field trip is to examine the dry heath and wet heath\, habitats which are now being managed under a Farm Management Plan funded by National Parks and Wildlife Service. There will be time to examine the quality of these habitats and discuss the actions which are required to be carried out under the Management Plan.\nFor more information and to book a place for this visit\, please respond to this email. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. We advise participants to dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day.  Please note\, there are no boats involved and no bookings necessary for this free event.  As some sites will require a short walk\, sensible footwear is recommended.  You should bring binoculars\, your sense of humour and refreshments. SUMMARY:Hedgerows\, a Biodiversity Lifeline\, with Irish Wildlife Trust and CECAS
DESCRIPTION:Myross Woods\, located near Leap in West Cork\, is a wildlife haven. The 30-acre site features ancient woodland and a coastal estuary managed by Green Skibbereen who run CECAS (Centre of Excellence for Climate Action and Sustainability) at Myross Woods House\, a community-powered hub. Stitching these habitats together are hedgerow plants – hawthorn\, bramble\, holly\, nettle. This living network provides shelter\, food\, navigation and connectivity for birds\, mammals\, insects\, and wildflowers.  \nOn this immersive walk\, the Irish Wildlife Trust join the CECAS team to discuss some of the communities of wildlife that rely on hedgerows and explore the history and cultural significance of these liminal spaces. SUMMARY:Searching for Swifts in Slane – Walk and Talk Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Birdwatch Ireland Meath Branch and Meath County Council for a gentle stroll in Slane to listen and look out for Slane’s endangered Swifts and discuss how this small population might be saved before it is too late. \nIn 2024\, Meath County Council with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund commissioned Birdwatch Ireland to survey the county’s Common Swift (Apus apus) population. This follows Meath’s first survey of Swifts in 2019.
