The event will be centred around Loughrea Lake and its shores and will involve counting as many species as possible within a 24 hour period from 19:30 on the 21st May until 19:30 on the 22nd May. Teams of ecologists will be active in the area counting species during this period and aiming to record as many as they can. \n\n\nIn addition\, there will be an event centre set up on the fair green and we are inviting members of the public to join us for some biodiversity-related guided walks\, talks and demonstrations. A list of the various activities is provided below. All activities are free and most are centred on the lakeshore and around the town. SUMMARY:Cloughjordan Cine Club: Listen to the Land Speak by Manchán Magan
DESCRIPTION:Cloughjordan Cine Club will host Listen to the Land Speak – a stunning watch\, full of dramatic\, star-soaked cinematography.  Ireland has rarely looked so beautiful. SUMMARY:Biodiversity Week 2026 | River Water Quality Assessment on the River Erkina
DESCRIPTION:Join Nore Vision to explore the health of the River Erkina. \nThe River Erkina is part of the River Nore catchment\, which is nationally and internationally important for the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera)\, one of Ireland’s most endangered species. \nDiscover how insects and other small river creatures act as natural indicators of pollution and river health\, and see how simple surveys can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface. \nFreshwater pearl mussels have very particular habitat requirements\, needing clean\, fast‑flowing rivers with stable gravel and cobble beds\, very low levels of fine sediment\, and excellent water quality.\nAs a tributary of the Nore\, the River Erkina contributes water\, sediment\, and nutrients downstream\, meaning its condition directly influences the suitability of pearl mussel habitat further along the catchment.

DESCRIPTION:What does a healthy river really look like?  This workshop introduces you to kick sampling – a technique used for gathering invertebrate species in the water. You will learn to identify some of the main species and get to understand how the presence or absence of certain key species in a river indicates whether the water quality is good or not. You will also learn about factors that contribute to pollution of waterways.  For more information\, contact info@norevision.ie or text 0863104008.  Dress for the weather\, and wear comfortable walking shoes.  Event Facilitator – Una Halpin.

SUMMARY:Community Workshop on Coastal Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday evening\, a community workshop(May 21\, 5:30-7:30pm) will bring people together to discuss the future of Strandhill’s coast. The session will introduce the CMAP project (Coastal Monitoring and Adaptation Planning) project and explore how local knowledge can help shape practical\, place-based responses to coastal change. \nYou can register for the Thursday evening workshop on the following link: https://StrandhillCMAP.eventbrite.ie \nStrandhill is one of several communities involved in the CMAP project\, a cross-border project aiming to better understand fragile beach and dune systems and plan for their future. Over the coming years\, the project will bring together scientific research and local knowledge to co-design long-term\, nature-based solutions for coastal resilience. \nThe CMAP project is supported by PEACEPLUS\, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)\, and co-funded by the European Union\, the Government of Ireland\, the Government of the United Kingdom\, and the Northern Ireland Executive.
