SUMMARY:Biodiversity Week 2026 | Biodiversity Networking
DESCRIPTION:Connect with people who care about nature over a cuppa! Join changemakers\, conservationists and community members for an inspiring morning of networking and idea sharing. \nBringing people together to network around biodiversity helps turn shared interest into coordinated action\, building stronger relationships\, knowledge exchange and collaboration across communities and sectors. \nThese connections can be essential for delivering practical\, joined‑up biodiversity outcomes that no single group can achieve alone.

SUMMARY:Blue Dots\, the jewels of our waterbodies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Blue Dot Event\, a day dedicated to celebrating biodiversity and encouraging people to connect with nature in their local area. Blue Dot sites are special places of high biodiversity value\, offering opportunities to learn about wildlife\, habitats\, and the importance of protecting nature close to home. \n  \nThis event will include guided walks\, hands‑on activities\, and short talks\, all designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you are a regular nature enthusiast or simply curious about the wildlife around you\, the Blue Dot Event offers a chance to slow down\, explore\, and discover more about the natural world. \nThe Blue Dot waters initiative in Ireland aims to protect water bodies designated as having High Ecological Status under the EU Water Framework Directive. These waters are recognised as the country’s cleanest and are vital for supporting a diverse range of pollution sensitive species. \nHigh status waters reflect largely undisturbed catchment conditions and status that is close to natural or pristine. They indicate the reference status that catchment management should strive to achieve. They may also be centres of high biodiversity\, or may contain rare and threatened habitats some of which are essential to survival of species with very particular ecological requirements such as the endangered fresh water pearl mussel. The presence of high status sites can contribute significantly to species diversity and these sites act as refuges for species that are a source for re-colonisation of river stretches that are recovering from pollution. High status sites and their catchments are also important providers of ecosystem goods and services and are areas of high natural capital value.

Anna merged scientific accuracy and artistic beauty in pioneering photograms that documented botanical specimens.  She self published the first book of photographic illustrations of algae.  Attendees will use photograms\, the technique of creating photographic prints without a camera is as old as photography itself.  This is a free unique event please book on Eventbrite. Over 14 years. This workshop will document the significance of this urban green space\, the plant species present and pay homage to our benefactor Kathleen Goodfellow and her artist friend Estella Solomons.https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/celebrate-national-biodiversity-week-photographic-cyanotype-workshop-tickets-1986991049718?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl \nThe Grove is located at the corner of Morehampton road and Wellington Place\, Donnybrook\, Dublin 4. SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk\, Irvinestown
DESCRIPTION:The Farrelly farm is a sheep enterprise nestled in the Fermanagh Lakeland’s\, working in harmony with livestock and nature. On the Farm\, you will see examples of Fred’s farmer-led innovative method of tree protection. Having previously struggled with using conventional protection\, he has successfully developed a simple\, more effective solution\, using electric fencing\, which has gained significant interest from a variety of farmers and tree planting organisations. \nTo enhance the farm’s long-term sustainability\, numerous trees have been planted to replace those lost due to storm damage or disease\, with additional trees introduced into fields. These trees provide valuable sources of pollen and nectar\, offer shade and shelter for livestock\, and increase future timber potential. The farm also features internal hedgerows\, established through laying and coppicing over 25 years ago\, which have been left to develop naturally\, creating a rich biodiverse landscape. \nWildlife is actively supported; bird boxes are integrated into farm buildings\, and bats are frequently observed at dusk. A riparian buffer zone was established many years ago to improve water quality and habitat\, resulting in the development of a rough grass margin. Furthermore\, double fencing along perimeter farm boundaries enhances biosecurity\, and the vegetation that has developed between the fences now provides additional habitat for wildlife. \nWhile this is a free event\, please register before as attendance is limited. \nRegister at: https://www.irishagroforestry.ie/

SUMMARY:Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, Howth Head\, Dublin
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. We advise participants to dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day.  Please note\, there are no boats involved and no bookings necessary for this free event.  As some sites will require a short walk\, sensible footwear is recommended.  You should bring binoculars\, your sense of humour and refreshments. Please leave your pets at home. \nThis event is suitable for all ages and is aimed at everyone from the novice wildlife enthusiast to more experienced naturalists\, with a keen interest in marine wildlife and biological recording.  In the event of unsuitable weather your watch leader may need to cancel your local event at short notice; so\, if any doubt\, please check in with them using their contact details below or on www.iwdg.ie/events.  But don’t hesitate to contact them\, or the event’s organiser\, if you’ve any further questions in the lead up to your event.
