DESCRIPTION:Ballymote Tidy Towns invite you to dive into the world of water bugs with scientists from the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO). Beginning in Margaret Gormley Memorial Park\, a sample of water bugs and insects from the stream will be used to determine the health of the water. We will then take a walk through the park to the castle to look at other wild and wet areas\, the biodiverse hotspots of our urban environment. \nThis is a family friendly event but all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Walking will be on the park pathways and adjacent grass areas.\nParking available at the railway station and Catholic Church. SUMMARY:Biodiversity Week 2026 | River Water Quality Assessment on the River Erkina
DESCRIPTION:Join Nore Vision to explore the health of the River Erkina. \nThe River Erkina is part of the River Nore catchment\, which is nationally and internationally important for the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera)\, one of Ireland’s most endangered species. \nDiscover how insects and other small river creatures act as natural indicators of pollution and river health\, and see how simple surveys can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface. \nFreshwater pearl mussels have very particular habitat requirements\, needing clean\, fast‑flowing rivers with stable gravel and cobble beds\, very low levels of fine sediment\, and excellent water quality.\nAs a tributary of the Nore\, the River Erkina contributes water\, sediment\, and nutrients downstream\, meaning its condition directly influences the suitability of pearl mussel habitat further along the catchment.
