SUMMARY:The Grove Donnybrook Botanical Walk and Photographic Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Grove will be open all afternoon from 2pm for visitors to enjoy this green oasis in the heart of the city. Botanist Catriona Brady will lead a guided walk of the plants of the Grove. Those on the photographic cyanotype workshop an collect samples. The workshop must be booked through Eventbrite as places are limited and aged over 14 years. At 3pm the cyanotype workshop  will begin with Visual Artist Sarah Louise Lordan. Photographic cyanotypes were first used in the early 19th century by botanist Anna Atkins. Over 14 years. This workshop will document the significance of this urban green space\, the plant species present and pay homage to our benefactor Kathleen Goodfellow and her artist friend Estella Solomons.https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/celebrate-national-biodiversity-week-photographic-cyanotype-workshop-tickets-1986991049718?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl \nThe Grove is located at the corner of Morehampton road and Wellington Place\, Donnybrook\, Dublin 4. SUMMARY:Blue Dots\, the jewels of our waterbodies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Blue Dot Event\, a day dedicated to celebrating biodiversity and encouraging people to connect with nature in their local area. Blue Dot sites are special places of high biodiversity value\, offering opportunities to learn about wildlife\, habitats\, and the importance of protecting nature close to home. \n  \nThis event will include guided walks\, hands‑on activities\, and short talks\, all designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you are a regular nature enthusiast or simply curious about the wildlife around you\, the Blue Dot Event offers a chance to slow down\, explore\, and discover more about the natural world. \nThe Blue Dot waters initiative in Ireland aims to protect water bodies designated as having High Ecological Status under the EU Water Framework Directive. These waters are recognised as the country’s cleanest and are vital for supporting a diverse range of pollution sensitive species. \nHigh status waters reflect largely undisturbed catchment conditions and status that is close to natural or pristine. They indicate the reference status that catchment management should strive to achieve. They may also be centres of high biodiversity\, or may contain rare and threatened habitats some of which are essential to survival of species with very particular ecological requirements such as the endangered fresh water pearl mussel. The presence of high status sites can contribute significantly to species diversity and these sites act as refuges for species that are a source for re-colonisation of river stretches that are recovering from pollution. High status sites and their catchments are also important providers of ecosystem goods and services and are areas of high natural capital value.

SUMMARY:Biodiversity Week 2026 | River Water Quality Assessment on the River Erkina
DESCRIPTION:Join Nore Vision to explore the health of the River Erkina. \nThe River Erkina is part of the River Nore catchment\, which is nationally and internationally important for the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera)\, one of Ireland’s most endangered species. \nDiscover how insects and other small river creatures act as natural indicators of pollution and river health\, and see how simple surveys can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface. \nFreshwater pearl mussels have very particular habitat requirements\, needing clean\, fast‑flowing rivers with stable gravel and cobble beds\, very low levels of fine sediment\, and excellent water quality.\nAs a tributary of the Nore\, the River Erkina contributes water\, sediment\, and nutrients downstream\, meaning its condition directly influences the suitability of pearl mussel habitat further along the catchment.

SUMMARY:Our Rivers: A Living Lab: A Living Catchment\, Kings River Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What does a healthy river really look like?  This workshop introduces you to kick sampling – a technique used for gathering invertebrate species in the water. You will learn to identify some of the main species and get to understand how the presence or absence of certain key species in a river indicates whether the water quality is good or not. You will also learn about factors that contribute to pollution of waterways.  For more information\, contact info@norevision.ie or text 0863104008.  Dress for the weather\, and wear comfortable walking shoes.  Event Facilitator – Una Halpin.
