DESCRIPTION:Grab a net\, or just pack your curiosity\, and join Brian Murray and NPWS for a Family Bug Safari at Dowth National Park. On every flower and beneath every leaf\, log and blade of grass lives a hidden world of beetles\, bees\, spiders\, springtails\, hoverflies and more — the tiny creatures that quietly keep our gardens\, parks and coastlines ticking. Together we’ll go hunting (gently!) for the miniature wildlife and discover why protecting invertebrates is one of the most powerful things any of us can do for biodiversity. Suitable for all ages\, no experience needed — just bring comfy shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and a willingness to get a little bit muddy or messy. Prepare to never look at a “creepy-crawly” the same way again. \nThis is an outdoor event so please dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear\, Please bring hats\, sunscreen and insect repellent. \nPlaces are limited so please book your place through the event link. \nMeeting point for this event will be at Netterville House. Wicklow\, and the founder of microWild\, a native wildflower and biodiversity project. He has collaborated with Trinity College Dublin\, the National Museum of Ireland and the NBDC on recording and identification work\, contributed new species records to Irish citizen science\, and is the organiser of Invertopia — Ireland’s first invertebrate biodiversity festival. Brian is passionate about getting families outdoors and showing people of all ages that you don’t need to travel far to find truly astonishing wildlife; most of it is already happening right under our feet.

SUMMARY:Walk on the Wildside of Golshane Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join Farming for Nature ambassador and Ecologist Donna Mullen for a gentle ramble around Golshane Nature Reserve. Donna and her husband\, Brian\, bought their 43-acre farm twenty five years ago. It initially comprised of three large fields of intensive grassland with little plant or animal diversity. Through their work and dedication\, it has been transformed into a nature reserve. \n  \nParticipants are advised that the Golshane Nature Reserve is uneven in parts. All participants are recommended to wear suitable sturdy footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing. Particpants are welcome to bring along a small snack or lunch. \n  \nTHIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED. \n  \nFunded by Meath County Council Heritage and Biodiversity Office and the Heritage Council. Ceangal\, the Local Authority Heritage Programme\, is delivered in partnership between the Heritage Council and Local Government Ireland.

SUMMARY:Loughrea Biodiversity Festival and Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Biodiversity Week 2026\, Galway County Council and local schools are teaming up with MKO\, The Galway Bay South East Catchment Community Forum and numerous other volunteers and groups to undertake a Bioblitz and Biodiversity festival in Loughrea. The event will be centred around Loughrea Lake and its shores and will involve counting as many species as possible within a 24 hour period from 19:30 on the 21st May until 19:30 on the 22nd May. Teams of ecologists will be active in the area counting species during this period and aiming to record as many as they can. \n\n\nIn addition\, there will be an event centre set up on the fair green and we are inviting members of the public to join us for some biodiversity-related guided walks\, talks and demonstrations. A list of the various activities is provided below. All activities are free and most are centred on the lakeshore and around the town. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\n\nWhat is a BioBlitz? It’s a race against the clock to find and identify as many species as possible within 24 hours. DESCRIPTION:Ballymote Tidy Towns invite you to dive into the world of water bugs with scientists from the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO). Beginning in Margaret Gormley Memorial Park\, a sample of water bugs and insects from the stream will be used to determine the health of the water. We will then take a walk through the park to the castle to look at other wild and wet areas\, the biodiverse hotspots of our urban environment. \nThis is a family friendly event but all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. SUMMARY:Skerries Bee Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Charles and Marion Heasman of Sustainable Skerries on a neighbourhood walk to explore the fascinating world of bees in Skerries. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCharles and Marion Heasman\, members of the Sustainable Skerries group\, will lead the walk through some public green spaces where seasonal wildflower meadows grow and bees tend to gather in the spring. Come along to learn about the world of Irish bees\, hopefully including some less common species- you may even realise that you have seen them before without knowing. \n  \nThe walk will be slow-paced and the full route should take about an hour and a half\, although there is no obligation to stay for the entire event. Wear suitable shoes for the walk\, bring water and make sure to dress properly for the weather. Families with children are welcome\, but please leave dogs and buggies/prams at home. The wildflower site is unfortunately not accessible for people with limited mobility\, as access requires crossing a steep area with loose ground. \n  \nThe meeting point is by the bus stop on Barnageeragh Road\, right next to the pedestrian bridge to the DART station. Because this is a fully outdoors event\, the walk is subject to weather conditions and may have to be postponed or cancelled if the forecast is poor. We will notify attendees if plans change\, so please register online here and keep an eye on your email inboxes in the days leading up to the walk. Registration will help us know how many people to expect\, and to keep everyone informed ahead of the event.
