SUMMARY:Tackling algae bloom in rural lakes.
DESCRIPTION:Ollan Herr-‘Zero Waste Alliance Ireland’ will report on a pilot project where local communities separated human urine to remove phosphorus. \n\n\n\n\nIn light of ongoing threats from algae bloom to local lakes including Lough Melvin\, Ollan Herr from Zero Waste Alliance Ireland will show how local groups and communities can play their own small part in reducing algal blooms in nearby local surface waters. He will report on a pilot project from Dundalk that they are doing that. He will advocate how this type of project can help ensure that phosphorus contained in wastewater be prevented from entering local surface waters. \nA potential significant further step can be the removal and the treatment of separated urine to reduce emissions of phosphorus entering groundwater from septic tanks and cattle slurry. \nWith the closing of the Gulf of Hormuz\, governments around the world are realising just how dependent we all are on the burning of fossil fuels to produce fertilisers\, in particular\, phosphorus fertilisers. A long war with Iran will cause global phosphorus fertilisers to become ever more expensive and be a risk to food security. Local communities can play their part in solutions and recycle phosphorus from separated urine in advance of any potentil  future food security crisis. \nOllan Herr is a director of Herr limited https://herr.ie \nand a board Director of Zero Waste Alliance Ireland. https://www.zwai.ie

SUMMARY:Drogheda to Sonairte Cycle for Biodiversity Week
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday May 17th Drogheda Cycling Group is cycling from Drogheda to Sonairte in Laytown to mark Bike Week and Biodiversity Week. \nSonairte is an interactive visitor centre promoting ecological awareness and sustainable living. It’s based in beautiful old stone farm buildings on the banks of the River Nanny. \nWhile there we will be treated to a guided walk where we will learn about foraging in the forest. This will be followed by a light lunch (vegan) before cycling back to Drogheda. \nThe distance is 12 km each way. We will predominantly use quiet country roads but there are small sections of busier roads as well. \nChildren aged 10+ are welcome if they are competent cyclists and are accompanied by a responsible adult. \nWe are meeting at the sports statues at Scotch Hall in Drogheda at 9.30 and returning to Drogheda at approximately 15.00. \nSponsored by Louth Co Co through the Louth Local Sports Partnership and the Irish Environmental Network.

SUMMARY:Loughrea Biodiversity Festival and Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Biodiversity Week 2026\, Galway County Council and local schools are teaming up with MKO\, The Galway Bay South East Catchment Community Forum and numerous other volunteers and groups to undertake a Bioblitz and Biodiversity festival in Loughrea. The event will be centred around Loughrea Lake and its shores and will involve counting as many species as possible within a 24 hour period from 19:30 on the 21st May until 19:30 on the 22nd May. Teams of ecologists will be active in the area counting species during this period and aiming to record as many as they can. \n\n\nIn addition\, there will be an event centre set up on the fair green and we are inviting members of the public to join us for some biodiversity-related guided walks\, talks and demonstrations. A list of the various activities is provided below. All activities are free and most are centred on the lakeshore and around the town. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\n\nWhat is a BioBlitz? It’s a race against the clock to find and identify as many species as possible within 24 hours. It’s a fun and educational way to learn about the amazing biodiversity right in our own backyard. \n\nThe full timetable of events is available here: Loughrea Biodiversity Festival and Bioblitz 2026 – MKO

SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk\, Drumard
DESCRIPTION:Bronagh’s farm boosts biodiversity through practical sustainable farming. Adaptive multi-paddock grazing is practised with longer rest and recovery times between grazing periods alongside sowing diverse seeds and encouraging the native seed bank to flourish to keep the soils healthy. She creates habitats by planting trees\, establishing an orchard\, carefully managing hedgerows and operating an apiary on the farm this helps increase set setting of clovers and pollinate the orchard and many trees. The farm uses no chemicals\, preferring to use natural soil amendments\, with some made on farm and some from the on-farm wormery. To cut down on air pollution\, she treats slurry biologically to reduce ammonia and manages farmyard manure to make a more compost like product. A developing pond will add new wetland space\, making the farm a great mix of habitats for wildlife. \nPlease register at: https://www.irishagroforestry.ie/farm-walks

SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk\, Irvinestown
DESCRIPTION:The Farrelly farm is a sheep enterprise nestled in the Fermanagh Lakeland’s\, working in harmony with livestock and nature. On the Farm\, you will see examples of Fred’s farmer-led innovative method of tree protection. Having previously struggled with using conventional protection\, he has successfully developed a simple\, more effective solution\, using electric fencing\, which has gained significant interest from a variety of farmers and tree planting organisations. \nTo enhance the farm’s long-term sustainability\, numerous trees have been planted to replace those lost due to storm damage or disease\, with additional trees introduced into fields. These trees provide valuable sources of pollen and nectar\, offer shade and shelter for livestock\, and increase future timber potential. The farm also features internal hedgerows\, established through laying and coppicing over 25 years ago\, which have been left to develop naturally\, creating a rich biodiverse landscape. \nWildlife is actively supported; bird boxes are integrated into farm buildings\, and bats are frequently observed at dusk. A riparian buffer zone was established many years ago to improve water quality and habitat\, resulting in the development of a rough grass margin. Furthermore\, double fencing along perimeter farm boundaries enhances biosecurity\, and the vegetation that has developed between the fences now provides additional habitat for wildlife. \nWhile this is a free event\, please register before as attendance is limited. \nRegister at: https://www.irishagroforestry.ie/farm-walks

SUMMARY:ESK MOUNTAIN VOLUNTEER DAY
DESCRIPTION:To mark National Biodiversity Week –  we’re running our first volunteer day of 2026 on Sunday 24th May!  Some weeks ago we launched a ‘Sponsor a Stake’ Campaign giving people a chance to sponsor a stake & help us secure the boundary of this 270 acre nature restoration project. We now need help getting our next batch of sponsored posts up onto the mountain as our fence line is only accessible by foot.  There’s also the task of hammering the posts into the ground & afixing the sponsor name tags. \nSo if you’d like a guided hike around the boundary line of Esk Mountain installing a fencing stake or two followed by a 2-course fireside dinner to end the day to say thank you! \n> Take a stake for a walk & help secure the boundary of Esk Mountain \n> Learn about the nature restoration work on site & the wider ecology of the Irish landscape \n> Enjoy a hike with spectacular 360 deg views of the Caha Mountains as well as Bantry Bay & the Kerry Mountains \n> Meet our small herd of Dexter cattle & learn about the virtual grazing system we use. \n> Dinner will include a hearty savoury dish\, dessert & drinks
