SUMMARY:Saving Swifts in Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Join Birdwatch Ireland Meath Branch and Meath County Council for an introduction to Enfield’s endangered Swift population and a discussion on how it might be saved before it is too late. \nBefore the conclusion\, event participants will be invited to take part in an optional visit to Jordanstown Church to look for the remaining breeding Swifts in the area. \nIn 2024\, Meath County Council with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund commissioned Birdwatch Ireland to survey the county’s Common Swift (Apus apus) population. This follows Meath’s first survey of Swifts in 2019. Both surveys showed that a small population of Swift continues to prevail in the outskirts of Enfield at Jordanstown Church but Swifts are at risk of being lost entirely from the area without concerted conservation action to protect and grow this population. \nMeeting location: St Mary’s Primary School\, Enfield \nGoogle Maps link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/z27xVr3JjpF7UmqM6 \nOrganised by Birdwatch Ireland Meath Branch in conjunction with Meath County Council Heritage and Biodiversity Office. Ceangal\, the Local Authority Heritage Programme\, is delivered in partnership between the Heritage Council and Local Government Ireland.

We’re collaborating with the wonderful people at Irish Peatland Conservation Council for this event which promises to be fun and filled with information about peatlands and native woodlands. \nWe will be meeting at Girley Hall in Fordstown at 7 pm on Wednesday the 20th of May 2026 (Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ji2w1mqYGtED7GJR9). \nWe will go for a nice walk past the Native Woodland Trust Girley Wood and around the boardwalk that goes through Girley Bog. This will be a great opportunity to get out on a Wednesday evening and to learn more about bog habitats and the various plants and animals that call this precious conservation area home. \nAll ages are welcome but please note\, we will be walking on uneven ground and along a boardwalk so this is not suitable for buggies. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nWhat to bring: \n\nWarm and waterproof clothing in layers\nHat and sunblock if it’s sunny!\nSturdy footwear\nPacked water and snacks\nAny medication you may need\n\nWhen we return to our cars\, will be providing tea\, coffee and biscuits. If you have a reusable coffee/tea cup\, please bring this along to minimize waste on the day. \nThere are no toilets on site. There is a toilet in the Top Oil Cloncat Service Station (Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/bJYEcFxF6psD1MmUA). However\, we cannot guarantee that the toilet will be in working order. The town of Kells is also nearby. \nCancellation Note: Events may be cancelled on short notice if there are adverse weather conditions or weather warnings in place. In the event that we do cancel an event on short notice\, we will send an email to inform you as early as possible. \nIf you book tickets but realise you will be unable to attend the event\, please let us know so we can make the ticket available for another person. \nWe look forward to you joining us on this biodiversity walk! \nNative Woodland Trust Contact: Jeremy Casey jeremy.casey@nativewoodlandtrust.ie \n+353871953629

SUMMARY:Natura Communities – Locally Embedded Conservation Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Join LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature on May 21st to mark both Biodiversity Week and Natura 2000 Day* by learning more about our Natura Communities initiative. This locally-embedded conservation programme is restoring Ireland’s Natura 2000 network\, while aligning with national policies on biodiversity\, water\, and climate. Delivering dual benefits\, Natura Communities is not only improving the ecological resilience of protected habitats; it is also creating vital jobs in rural areas. \nDuring this webinar\, you will have a chance to hear from three groups delivering projects through the Natura Communities initiative. Projects are currently ongoing in counties Galway\, Mayo and Donegal\, with plans to expand to additional areas in 2026 and beyond\, with support from both the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Shared Island Fund. \nJoin us on Teams on May 21st at 2.30pm to find out more about this exciting programme and future plans. \nTo attend\, please register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/1987504797351 \n* The European Union declared 21st May as European Natura 2000 Day to celebrate the Natura 2000 network. As one of the EU’s most outstanding achievements\, this day is to honour the efforts of everyone involved in making it a success. \nThe network is rooted in the EU Habitats and Bird Directives\, and today consists of more than 27\,000 sites across EU land and seas\, successfully contributing to the preservation of our unique European natural heritage.
