Tipperary. \nThere will be various biodiversity talks\, workshops and planting potted trees with schools and the local Roscrea community throughout the week.  Come and join us or check out events in your own local area. \nThe Whole Week: Dimmas Books at SVP Roscrea: Display of biodiversity publications; special offers on these books during the week. \n3 School Talks to Senior Pupils on Biodiversity.  Trees acquired from Trees on the Land potted up and presented to senior pupils. Also plant a memorial tree in honour of 6th class. Coolderry Central School\, Brosna Birr – Sacred Heart Primary School Roscrea – Cloughjordan No 1 NS. \nPublic participation with trees will take place through Tidy Towns. \nNational Biodiversity Week 15th – 24th May 2026 is all about connecting people with nature. It’s about communicating the importance of biodiversity and motivating people to play their part in protecting it. It’s also about entertaining them\, showing the fun and wonder that can be found in nature\, and inspiring people to learn more\, see more\, do more. \nNational Biodiversity Week is organised by the Irish Environmental Network (IEN)\, with thanks to funding from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

SUMMARY:Tackling algae bloom in rural lakes.
DESCRIPTION:Ollan Herr-‘Zero Waste Alliance Ireland’ will report on a pilot project where local communities separated human urine to remove phosphorus. \n\n\n\n\nIn light of ongoing threats from algae bloom to local lakes including Lough Melvin\, Ollan Herr from Zero Waste Alliance Ireland will show how local groups and communities can play their own small part in reducing algal blooms in nearby local surface waters. He will report on a pilot project from Dundalk that they are doing that. He will advocate how this type of project can help ensure that phosphorus contained in wastewater be prevented from entering local surface waters. \nA potential significant further step can be the removal and the treatment of separated urine to reduce emissions of phosphorus entering groundwater from septic tanks and cattle slurry. \nWith the closing of the Gulf of Hormuz\, governments around the world are realising just how dependent we all are on the burning of fossil fuels to produce fertilisers\, in particular\, phosphorus fertilisers. A long war with Iran will cause global phosphorus fertilisers to become ever more expensive and be a risk to food security. DESCRIPTION:Join the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and the Native Woodland Trust on a Biodiversity Walk around the beautiful Girley Bog \n\n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate National Biodiversity Week in visiting Girley Wood reserve and surrounding Girley Bog. We’re collaborating with the wonderful people at Irish Peatland Conservation Council for this event which promises to be fun and filled with information about peatlands and native woodlands. \nWe will be meeting at Girley Hall in Fordstown at 7 pm on Wednesday the 20th of May 2026 (Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ji2w1mqYGtED7GJR9). \nWe will go for a nice walk past the Native Woodland Trust Girley Wood and around the boardwalk that goes through Girley Bog. This will be a great opportunity to get out on a Wednesday evening and to learn more about bog habitats and the various plants and animals that call this precious conservation area home. \nAll ages are welcome but please note\, we will be walking on uneven ground and along a boardwalk so this is not suitable for buggies. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nWhat to bring: \n\nWarm and waterproof clothing in layers\nHat and sunblock if it’s sunny!\nSturdy footwear\nPacked water and snacks\nAny medication you may need\n\nWhen we return to our cars\, will be providing tea\, coffee and biscuits. If you have a reusable coffee/tea cup\, please bring this along to minimize waste on the day. \nThere are no toilets on site. There is a toilet in the Top Oil Cloncat Service Station (Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/bJYEcFxF6psD1MmUA). However\, we cannot guarantee that the toilet will be in working order. SUMMARY:Hedgerows\, a Biodiversity Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Hedgerows are the stitches that hold our countryside together. This living network provides shelter\, food\, navigation and connectivity for birds\, mammals\, insects\, and wildflowers. Though planted as boundaries\, they do not divide but rather connect habitats. On this immersive walk we will discuss some of the communities of wildlife that rely on hedgerows\, how hedgerows act as a carbon sink and aid flood mitigation. We will explore how hedgerows give identity and character to the landscape\, deepening our understanding of their history and cultural significance.  \nSadly\, hedgerows are under attack\, with invasive and non-native plant species presenting a major threat to native flora and biodiversity. We will take a look at examples of the damage caused by invasive species and what can be done to reverse this. Leitrim. \nLed by Jeremy Casey\, General Manager of the Native Woodland Trust\, this gentle walk explores a native woodland planted almost 20 years ago — now a thriving sanctuary for wildlife. The reserve supports mammals such as red squirrel\, pine marten and badger\, alongside veteran and ancient trees. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn about woodland plants and animals\, what it takes to establish a native woodland\, and the folklore that connects Irish people to our woodland past. \nWe’ll meet at a nearby GAA club before carpooling to Farnaght Wood. \n📍 Event Details\n🗓 Date: Sunday 24th May 2026\n⏰ Time: 11:00am – 2:00pm\n📌 Meeting Point: Gortletteragh GAA Club\, Drumshambo South\, Co.
