SUMMARY:Irish Wildlife Trust: Trawling for Answers Film Screening\, with Kenmare Tidy Towns
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Kenmare Celebration of Our Bay festival the Irish Wildlife Trust is delighted to be hosting a screening of their documentary film Trawling for Answers. This film  explores issues around bottom trawling and marine protection in Ireland. Grace Carr\, IWT Marine Advocacy Officer\, speaks with  fish producer organisations\, environmental researchers\, ex commercial bottom trawlers\, conservationists and more in a trip around Ireland seeking to find out how well our waters are protected and what else needs to be done.  \nThe event will consist of the film screening followed by a Q&A at the Carnegie Arts Centre\, after which we will head over to the Lansdowne Arms Hotel for an informal discussion of the film’s themes.

This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. SUMMARY:Bumblebees for beginners - Searching for the Large Carder Bumblebee
DESCRIPTION:Learn about bumblebees\, how to identify Ireland’s 21 different species\, and how to take part in the monthly bumblebee monitoring scheme. The east coast of Meath has some good habitats for pollinators and weather permitting\, we should be able to find and identify some local bumblebees\, including one Ireland’s most threatened bumblebees\, the Large Carder Bumblebee. \nThis workshop will include indoor and outdoor components. The event is suitable for people of all ages and will last approximately 2 hours\, starting off with an introductory presentation on identifying bumblebees\, followed by a brief pause before venturing into local coastal dune habitat in search of bumblebees. The walk does not involve strenuous activity\, but do wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Participants are welcome to bring a small snack. \nThis is a free event\, but booking is required. DESCRIPTION:Hear about the importance of saltmarsh\, machair and shore habitats as we take a wander down the Causeway in Mulranny. On this International Day for Biodiversity 2026\, the theme is ‘acting locally for global impact’ and participants will be encouraged to litter pick as we explore the habitats that make this area so important for vegetation and wildlife. Once we reach the shoreline\, we will take a look at the shoreline animals that can be monitored by the community and use the Explore Your Shore guides to identify some of the common sea shells at the tideline. Come along and take action! \nThis event is open to all ages. Note that the surfaces throughout the walk cover steps\, gravel and uneven ground including sand.
