DESCRIPTION:Theme: Celebrating Irish biodiversity through the hidden clues wildlife leaves behind. \nThis event invites participants to become detectives and discover the wildlife all around us. Even though we may not see them\, they leave tracks and signs that tell us they are there. As wildlife detectives we will examine feeding remains\, foot prints and scenarios and learn how to identify common Irish species while exploring how animals communicate\, travel\, feed\, and interact with their habitats. \nThe aim is to build ecological awareness\, spark curiosity and encourage people to record findings in their local area. Delivered by an experienced wildlife educator\, this workshop is designed to be inclusive\, engaging and suitable for mixed ages. \n

SUMMARY:Where Bog and Woodland Meet
DESCRIPTION:Join the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and the Native Woodland Trust on a Biodiversity Walk around the beautiful Girley Bog \n\n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate National Biodiversity Week in visiting Girley Wood reserve and surrounding Girley Bog. We’re collaborating with the wonderful people at Irish Peatland Conservation Council for this event which promises to be fun and filled with information about peatlands and native woodlands. \nWe will be meeting at Girley Hall in Fordstown at 7 pm on Wednesday the 20th of May 2026 (Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ji2w1mqYGtED7GJR9). \nWe will go for a nice walk past the Native Woodland Trust Girley Wood and around the boardwalk that goes through Girley Bog. This will be a great opportunity to get out on a Wednesday evening and to learn more about bog habitats and the various plants and animals that call this precious conservation area home. \nAll ages are welcome but please note\, we will be walking on uneven ground and along a boardwalk so this is not suitable for buggies. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nWhat to bring: \n\nWarm and waterproof clothing in layers\nHat and sunblock if it’s sunny!\nSturdy footwear\nPacked water and snacks\nAny medication you may need\n\nWhen we return to our cars\, will be providing tea\, coffee and biscuits. If you have a reusable coffee/tea cup\, please bring this along to minimize waste on the day. \nThere are no toilets on site. There is a toilet in the Top Oil Cloncat Service Station (Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/bJYEcFxF6psD1MmUA). However\, we cannot guarantee that the toilet will be in working order. The town of Kells is also nearby. \nCancellation Note: Events may be cancelled on short notice if there are adverse weather conditions or weather warnings in place. SUMMARY:Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, Howth Head\, Dublin
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. We advise participants to dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day.  Please note\, there are no boats involved and no bookings necessary for this free event.  As some sites will require a short walk\, sensible footwear is recommended.  You should bring binoculars\, your sense of humour and refreshments. Please leave your pets at home. \nThis event is suitable for all ages and is aimed at everyone from the novice wildlife enthusiast to more experienced naturalists\, with a keen interest in marine wildlife and biological recording.  In the event of unsuitable weather your watch leader may need to cancel your local event at short notice; so\, if any doubt\, please check in with them using their contact details below or on www.iwdg.ie/events.  But don’t hesitate to contact them\, or the event’s organiser\, if you’ve any further questions in the lead up to your event.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. We advise participants to dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day.  Please note\, there are no boats involved and no bookings necessary for this free event.  As some sites will require a short walk\, sensible footwear is recommended.  You should bring binoculars\, your sense of humour and refreshments.
