SUMMARY:A Journey along the Nature Trails and Boreens of Galway city
DESCRIPTION:A guided cycle and walk along a network of nature heritage trails of Terryland Forest Park as well as\nthe traditional boreens (country lanes) that still exist in its surrounding environs which were until a\nfew decades ago a rural area of small farms and pasture lands but are now part of the urban\nlandscape of Galway city.\nThose that take part in this event will by their participation become aware of how these trails and\nboreens can take become a rich mosaic of ecological corridors\, greenways and travel routes that will\nhelp transform Galway into a city defined by its green\, blue and active travel infrastructure.

This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. These simultaneous land-based watches at the 18 sites listed below from around the Irish coast provide IWDG researchers\, whale enthusiasts and Citizen Scientists alike with a unique overview of whale and dolphin activity on the day and you can play an important part. \nWhile there are of course no guarantees of sightings\, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the whale and dolphin species that can be seen locally. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 23rd May the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group (IWDG) invites you to join us at a local headland for Whale Watch Ireland 2026\, between 5:00-7:00 PM. This annual event\, now in its 24th year\, comprises free and guided watches at local headlands and vantage points\, as part of All-Ireland whale watch day. \nThis year’s event is once again being held to coincide with National Biodiversity Week Ireland which runs between May 15th-24th.  It is also hoped that moving it from late summer\, will improve our odds of hosting this outdoor event in better weather conditions\, as in recent years late August has simply become too unreliable with strong winds and rain. Blue Dot sites are special places of high biodiversity value\, offering opportunities to learn about wildlife\, habitats\, and the importance of protecting nature close to home. \n  \nThis event will include guided walks\, hands‑on activities\, and short talks\, all designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you are a regular nature enthusiast or simply curious about the wildlife around you\, the Blue Dot Event offers a chance to slow down\, explore\, and discover more about the natural world. \nThe Blue Dot waters initiative in Ireland aims to protect water bodies designated as having High Ecological Status under the EU Water Framework Directive. These waters are recognised as the country’s cleanest and are vital for supporting a diverse range of pollution sensitive species. \nHigh status waters reflect largely undisturbed catchment conditions and status that is close to natural or pristine. They indicate the reference status that catchment management should strive to achieve. They may also be centres of high biodiversity\, or may contain rare and threatened habitats some of which are essential to survival of species with very particular ecological requirements such as the endangered fresh water pearl mussel. The presence of high status sites can contribute significantly to species diversity and these sites act as refuges for species that are a source for re-colonisation of river stretches that are recovering from pollution. High status sites and their catchments are also important providers of ecosystem goods and services and are areas of high natural capital value.

DESCRIPTION:Hear about the importance of saltmarsh\, machair and shore habitats as we take a wander down the Causeway in Mulranny. On this International Day for Biodiversity 2026\, the theme is ‘acting locally for global impact’ and participants will be encouraged to litter pick as we explore the habitats that make this area so important for vegetation and wildlife. Once we reach the shoreline\, we will take a look at the shoreline animals that can be monitored by the community and use the Explore Your Shore guides to identify some of the common sea shells at the tideline. Come along and take action! \nThis event is open to all ages. Note that the surfaces throughout the walk cover steps\, gravel and uneven ground including sand.
