SUMMARY:Saving Swifts in Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Join Birdwatch Ireland Meath Branch and Meath County Council for an introduction to Enfield’s endangered Swift population and a discussion on how it might be saved before it is too late. \nBefore the conclusion\, event participants will be invited to take part in an optional visit to Jordanstown Church to look for the remaining breeding Swifts in the area. \nIn 2024\, Meath County Council with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund commissioned Birdwatch Ireland to survey the county’s Common Swift (Apus apus) population. This follows Meath’s first survey of Swifts in 2019. Both surveys showed that a small population of Swift continues to prevail in the outskirts of Enfield at Jordanstown Church but Swifts are at risk of being lost entirely from the area without concerted conservation action to protect and grow this population. \nMeeting location: St Mary’s Primary School\, Enfield \nGoogle Maps link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/z27xVr3JjpF7UmqM6 \nOrganised by Birdwatch Ireland Meath Branch in conjunction with Meath County Council Heritage and Biodiversity Office. Ceangal\, the Local Authority Heritage Programme\, is delivered in partnership between the Heritage Council and Local Government Ireland.

SUMMARY:Dusk Chorus Walk at BirdWatchIreland’s East Coast Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join the Birdwatch Ireland for a Dusk Chorus Walk at East Coast Nature Reserve. May is the height of the bird-breeding season when birds are most active pairing up and defending territories. It is also the time of year volunteers are out surveying for the Countryside Bird Survey. Come and enjoy a walk while learning why the birds are singing and why we survey them. We will be listening to and observing the array of bird species present on the reserve\, if lucky we will hear Woodpecker and Grasshopper Warbler\, but old friends like Willow Warblers and Robins should be chipping in too!\n\nPlease  dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear as there is some uneven ground. Meet at the main Sea Road entrance at 8 PM.\n\nThe Countryside Bird Survey coordinated by BirdWatch Ireland under contract to the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Thanks also to  Wicklow County Council for funding for habitat works on the reserve.\n\nContact: alynch@birdwatchireland.ie
