This year for National Biodiversity Week, the IWDG is hosting a virtual workshop for young ocean heroes thanks to the Irish Environmental Network.
Based on IWDG’s new educational resource, ‘Ireland’s Blubber Book; Flukes Junior Vol. 1’, the workshop will engage young people on the marine mammal biodiversity found in Irish waters and how they are helping tackle climate change.
Participants will also be encouraged to create a project (drawing, painting or poem) based on what they have learned during the presentation and submit it to IWDG education and outreach officer Sibéal Regan firstname.lastname@example.org to win some fantastic prizes.
Prizes are sponsored by the Irish Environmental Network and will be announced at the end of biodiversity week (Sunday the 23rd of May). To be in with a chance to win a prize, participants must register and attend the workshop.
Learn about marine mammal biodiversity in Irish waters and how to identify the most frequently seen coastal species in an engaging virtual workshop hosted by the IWDG with thanks to the Irish Environmental Network.
This workshop is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds. No prior knowledge of cetaceans is required to join this workshop, although an interest and a passion for the marine is desirable.
During this workshop, you will learn about marine mammal biodiversity in Ireland. When and where you are likely to see whales and dolphins, what environmental conditions are preferred for whale watching and how to identify the most frequently observed coastal species around the Island of Ireland.
Three identification guides to whales and dolphins of Ireland will be up for grabs to further encourage citizen scientists to keep exploring and watching for marine mammals after the workshop. All you have to do is download the IWDG reporting app and take part in a self-directed whale watch on a stretch of coastline close to you before the end of biodiversity week on the 23rd of May and send or tag the IWDG and IEN in a photo of you outside embracing nature on social media.
