Biodiversity in the Coomhola River Catchment @ Bantry, Cork

Participants will go instream to sample aquatic macroinvertebrates, learn how to identify them, and how this census indicates local Water Quality. This will form the basis for ensuing dialogue on how these invertebrates interact with other species within the local Foodweb, and how our adoption of Best Practice in pursuit of livelihood, recreation, and domestic management may lessen anthropogenic impacts upon local Habitats & Species.

The ‘Blue Dot’ initiative seeks to conserve remaining ‘HighStatus’ waterbodies throughout Ireland. As the Coomhola River has been classified ‘BlueDot’, we will look at what this means for the Catchment and how citizens may contribute to the Blue DotCatchment concept.

Biodiversity Week 2021 in County Wicklow

National Biodiversity Week takes place 15th – 23rd May 2021 and offers a wonderful  opportunity to celebrate and explore  the rich variety of life in Ireland

In Wicklow, the Heritage& Biodiversity Office has teamed up once more with Wicklow Libraries to host one evening talk and one lunchtime workshop details as follows;

Tuesday 18th May 7 pm Wicklow Rivers Ecology & Connectivity; Join us to find out more about Wicklow’s rivers and some of the initiatives underway to improve the connectivity of these by remediating instream barriers to fish migration.

Thursday 20th May 1-2 pm Summer Wildflower Workshop: A lunchtime workshop from Oisin Duffy to assist in the identification and recording of our seasonal wildflowers

This is an exciting time in the development of Citizen Science, making it fun and exciting to participate,as well as being able to fill gaps in State& Academiagenerated Biodiversity Data. The ‘Citizen Science Stream Index’, being developed by Dr. Simon Harrisonof UCC for nationwide rollout, is a new system of Aquatic Invertebrate census which it is hoped will augment Water Quality surveys by the EPA. Bring your wellies!

demonstrate how communities can check
for important biodiversity indicators of
water quality. Conor works with the Local
Authorities Water Programme with aims
to improve community engagement and
support the delivery of local communityled
water quality projects and initiatives.

Launch of the ‘Salmon Sanctuaries’ Booklet @ Bantry, Cork

Coomhola Salmon Trust have partnered with NASCO, LAWPRO, Cork & Kerry County Councils to develop this booklet dedicated to wild Atlantic Salmon. Thebooklet will be launched (with free copies distributed to participants) and the wonder & importance of wild salmon will be discussed.
