To celebrate Biodiversity Week 2022 (15th to 22nd May) join Sonairte for a FREE guided walk and talk on the 20th of May with our own gardener Damien McGroarty to learn about how organic farming can protect biodiversity whilst producing healthy local food, and enjoy a guided tour of the Nature Trail at Sonairte.
The Nature Trail is located on the banks of the River Nanny estuary which is a Special Protection (SPA) under the E.U. Birds Directive, of special conservation interest for the following species: Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Knot, Sanderling and Herring Gull. The E.U. Birds Directive pays particular attention to wetlands, and as these form part of this SPA, the site and its associated waterbirds are of special conservation interest https://www.npws.ie/protected-sites/spa/004158. Additionally, the Nature Trail has a range of habitats from salt marsh to woodland and permanent pasture so you are sure to have a fascinating day out in Nature.
About this event
As part of Biodiversity Week we will be running a nature walk at Girley Wood.
Girley Wood is a new woodland area which was planted by the Native Woodland Trust. We will have the opportunity to explore this woodland, learn how to identify some of the plants and trees and look out for animals which we might encounter.
We will bring along magnifying glasses, bug boxes and identification keys and explore the woodland as a group.
Once we have explored the woodland, we will stop and have our picnic. We will be bringing along some food, snacks and sweet treats to the picnic! If you have any food allergies, please bring along some of your own food too, as we won’t be able to ensure food won’t come into contact with allergens.
Our minimum age for this event is 5 years old. Please note that it is a 15 minute walk from the carpark to the woodland site.
Please carpool where it is possible to do so, car parking is our limiting factor for the amount of people that can attend.
It is essential to bring warm and waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear.
Join Sonairte, Flynn Furney Ecology Consultancy and Liam Keane from Bettystown Tidy Towns together with invited community groups, local representatives and individuals to celebrate the launch of our Biodiversity Action Plan for the East Meath area: Our Biodiversity from the Nanny to the Boyne
Billy Flynn and Louise MacElwain will take us through the main findings and recommendation from the Biodiversity Action Plan, and Liam Keane will discuss some of the Actions already being taken to implement the BAP. We will be looking for volunteers and ideas to help with protecting our local biodiversity (Hint, see event on Sunday 22nd May!).
Free buffet lunch will be provided.
To celebrate Biodiversity Week 2022 (15th to 22nd May) join Sonairte on Saturday 21st of May for a Bat Walk and Survey event with the Meath Bat Group. The Meath Bat Group is a member of Bat Conservation Ireland, a charity group dedicated to the conservation of bats and their habitats.
This event starts at 8 PM in the Long Hall with a presentation on bats to learn more about various species in Ireland and their habitats. As the sun goes down, the Meath Bat Group will take you around the Sonairte grounds on a bat walk/bat survey. This event is expected to end around 11 PM, but there will be opportunity to leave earlier for families with children.
