On Saturday 15 th May , botanist Ciaran Bruton will lead us on a walk around the habitats of Merlin Park Woods , exploring the wildflowers.

Ciaran has a great knowledge of the wildflowers and grasses of Merlin Park Woods and has studied the wide variety of habitats over the last number of years, an opportunity to learn how to identify some of the amazing late Spring / early Summer species of Merlin Park Woods

The event will leave from the Merlin Woods Community Garden at 11 am and will have a limited number of people in attendance to comply with Covid guidelines. All tickets will be have to be booked through eventbrite to attend . The event is organised by Friends of Merlin Woods as part of Biodiversityweek 2021.

Join artist Debbie Reilly for a workshop on creating with nature in Merlin Woods.

Artist and Woodland Copicer Debbie Reilly has worked with Friends of Merlin Woods for a number of years on many different projects which aims to educate and inform people on how to care and enjoy time in the woodlands . Join us in this beautiful workshop to create your own piece of natural art in Merlin Woods working with the principle of Leave No Trace.

This project commenced during Galway 2020 and we would like to continue to give people a chance to participate in a hands on workshop.

The event will leave from the Merlin Woods Community Garden at 11 am and will have a limited number of people in attendance to comply with Covid guidelines. Join Padraic Kearns on a walk around Merlin Woods to explore the songs of the various species of birds which inhabit the area.

May is an amazing month to hear birdsong.

Padraic Kearns an expert on a wide variety of natural species and habitats will lead us on a walk around Merlin Park Woods to hear the songs of our birds and perhaps catch a glimpse of some of the various different species . Padraig has lead us on various different walks over the years in Merlin Woods and it is always a pleasure to learn from someone with so much knowledge and information on our native wildlife.

Ruth Hanniffy , Vincent Wildlife Trust brings us on a journey around Merlin Woods exploring the habitats and signs of our native mammals.

Ruth brings us on a journey around Merlin Woods exploring the varying habitats needed by our local mammals. We learn how to find signs, tracks and trails of some of our well-loved mammals such as the Red Squirrel, foxes and other mamals which use the woodland.

Colin Stanley will lead a walk exploring the habitats and species of butterflies in Merlin Park Woods . Galway Butterfly Project educates on the butterflies of Galway city and county , the importance of habitat conservation, foodplants needed for the survival of our butterflies and where they may be found in your local area.

The Irish Community Archive Network presents an online talk with ecologist Janice Fuller, who will share some ideas for protecting and enhancing nature and wildlife in our towns, villages and urban spaces.

Janice Fuller is an ecologist based in south Galway. She has an in-depth knowledge of the Irish flora and habitats based on many years’ experience of ecological field survey and research. Janice also has a particular interest in community development and the Tidy Towns movement. She has facilitated the production of numerous local biodiversity action plans for Tidy Towns groups in Galway, Clare and Mayo, and been involved in a wide range of community-led biodiversity projects. As a national Tidy Towns adjudicator, Janice has had the privilege of seeing the great work done by Tidy Towns groups around the country for the benefit of the natural world and their communities. She has delivered biodiversity training for community groups, local authorities and for the outdoor recreation sector. Janice is passionate about communicating the importance of biodiversity in our everyday lives and sharing the joy of nature
