On Saturday 15 th May , botanist Ciaran Bruton will lead us on a walk around the habitats of Merlin Park Woods , exploring the wildflowers.

Ciaran has a great knowledge of the wildflowers and grasses of Merlin Park Woods and has studied the wide variety of habitats over the last number of years, an opportunity to learn how to identify some of the amazing late Spring / early Summer species of Merlin Park Woods

The event will leave from the Merlin Woods Community Garden at 11 am and will have a limited number of people in attendance to comply with Covid guidelines. All tickets will be have to be booked through eventbrite to attend . The event is organised by Friends of Merlin Woods as part of Biodiversityweek 2021.

Participants will go instream to sample aquatic macroinvertebrates, learn how to identify them, and how this census indicates local Water Quality. This will form the basis for ensuing dialogue on how these invertebrates interact with other species within the local Foodweb, and how our adoption of Best Practice in pursuit of livelihood, recreation, and domestic management may lessen anthropogenic impacts upon local Habitats & Species.

Padraic Kearns an expert on a wide variety of natural species and habitats will lead us on a walk around Merlin Park Woods to hear the songs of our birds and perhaps catch a glimpse of some of the various different species . Padraig has lead us on various different walks over the years in Merlin Woods and it is always a pleasure to learn from someone with so much knowledge and information on our native wildlife.

Ruth brings us on a journey around Merlin Woods exploring the varying habitats needed by our local mammals. We learn how to find signs, tracks and trails of some of our well-loved mammals such as the Red Squirrel, foxes and other mamals which use the woodland.

Our Scavenger Hunt and activity sheets ensure that the whole family can take part in the weekend fun, and have some time away from screens. Head outside to see what you can find!

Choose one of two sheets, Easy Peasy (suggested age range 4 – 7) or A Little Tricky (suggested age range 8 -12).

In line with the relaxation of government Covid restrictions Sonairte is delighted to be re-opening to the public just in time for Biodiversity Week! The centre (excluding cafe) will reopen to the public on Friday 21st May and will be open to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. To celebrate Biodiversity Week 2021 we are giving free entry to the organic garden and nature trail to all visitors for Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd May. On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd up to 15 visitors can sign up on entry for a free guided tour of the garden focussing on how organic growing and working with nature can protect and enhance our biodiversity. Just add your name to the clip board in the Eco Shop. Tours will take place from 2pm to 3pm each day so arrive early to reserve your spot!

The ‘Citizen Science Stream Index’, being developed by Dr. Simon Harrisonof UCC for nationwide rollout, is a new system of Aquatic Invertebrate census which it is hoped will augment Water Quality surveys by the EPA. The event will be outdoors, so bring your wellies and your raincoats just in case!
