Biodiversity Walk and Picnic
May 21 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Biodiversity Walk and Picnic
We will go on a plant and tree identification walk and then sit down to have a lovely picnic afterward!

About this event

As part of Biodiversity Week we will be running a nature walk at Girley Wood.

Girley Wood is a new woodland area which was planted by the Native Woodland Trust. We will have the opportunity to explore this woodland, learn how to identify some of the plants and trees and look out for animals which we might encounter.

We will bring along magnifying glasses, bug boxes and identification keys and explore the woodland as a group.

Once we have explored the woodland, we will stop and have our picnic. We will be bringing along some food, snacks and sweet treats to the picnic! If you have any food allergies, please bring along some of your own food too, as we won’t be able to ensure food won’t come into contact with allergens.

Our minimum age for this event is 5 years old. Please note that it is a 15 minute walk from the carpark to the woodland site.

Please carpool where it is possible to do so, car parking is our limiting factor for the amount of people that can attend.

It is essential to bring warm and waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear.

Native Tree Workshop @ Castleblayney Community Gardens & Allotments
May 22 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Native Tree Workshop @ Castleblayney Community Gardens & Allotments

Do you want to set up a small tree nursery? Or do you just want to grow a few of your favourite native trees?

Come along to the Castleblayney Community Gardens & Allotments where local tree aficionado, John McKeon, will be hosting a native tree workshop. John has 15 plots of native Irish trees growing in his nursery (from seeds collected in and around County Monaghan) and he will be sharing his experience in (1) identifying and collecting seeds; (2) seed bed preparation, which is particularly relevant in heavy clay soils like we have in our county; and (3) seed storage, stratification and sowing, as required by the different seeds for successful propagation. John will also highlight good tree nursery management and problems that can arise. The species he has growing are Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Buckthorn, Wild Cherry, Bird Cherry, Crab Apple, Alder, Elm, Hazel, Holly, Oak, Rowan, Spindle, Guelder Rose, and Willow. Tea and coffee will be served afterwards.

Booking is compulsory for this event. Bookings can be made by emailing monaghanbranch@iwt.ie
