Do you have what it takes to be a Waterway Hero? May is a lovely time of year to get outdoors and explore the waterways.
Check out our free online workshop ‘Be a Waterway Hero’ as part of Biodiversity Week. The workshop features a virtual visit to the waterways highlighting the importance of being a responsible waterway user and respecting the environment when visiting your local canal, river or lake. There are lots of fun and interesting activities included like our Waterway Eco Wheel or Biodiversity Inspection which can be downloaded to bring along when you visit to your local waterway. There is also a ‘Waterway Hero’ certificate for all who take part!

Coomhola Salmon Trust has announced its range of StreamScapes Events in support of 2022 National Biodiversity Week, all to be held at ‘The StreamSchool’, Coomhola, Bantry, County Cork P75 TY47, between 13-22 May.
Following Schools Engagements during the Day, an ‘Introduction to River Ecology’ event with
Heritage-in-Schools Teacher & noted forager Stephanie O’Toole & Rauri Maguire: 3:00-5:00pm

Two walks: 11am and 2pm with Botanists Howard and Maria who will discuss the biodiversity they spot , trees, plants, mosses, algae. Talk and walk, along the new walkway leading from the Organic Centre toward Fowleys falls.
The walks will be outdoors , so bring your wellies and your raincoats just in case.

Join Sonairte for a fun day out with free lunch and free training in 3rd schedule invasive species , followed by direct community actions to implement some of the actions in our Biodiversity Action Plan. Depending on the numbers of volunteers we will have either one or two teams who will carry out community actions to conserve biodiversity including clearing any rubbish contaminating our waterways and shores.
Free buffet lunch will be provided!

Woodlands, Water & Biodiversity: Celebrate National Biodiversity Week with a ramble at Billy Fox Memorial Park to explore the flora and fauna which inhabit our local streams, rivers and woodlands.
Ben Malone, Community Water Officer with the Local Authority Waters Programme will be on hand to reveal the rich biodiversity that can be found in our local streams and rivers and will demonstrate how members of the public can engage in citizen science aimed at revealing the water quality in our local watercourses.
This will be followed by an exploration of the biodiversity that can be found within the woodland habitats of the park. Participants will accompany ecologist Goska Wilkowska from Nature’s Patch Network who will help to identify the different types of plants and animals encountered and discuss the importance of a diverse landscape rich in semi-natural habitats for a healthy river catchment.
This free family friendly event will take place from 11:00am – 1.00pm on Sunday 22nd May,

Biodiversity in Your Local River demonstration for families with Inland Fisheries Ireland fishermen. Demo part based on ‘There’s something Fishy Program’. We’ve seen some of it already from our camera but learn about what lives in the waters near the Organic Centre this Biodiversity day .
