In celebration of Biodiversity Week 2023, Clare County Council is hosting a bog walk and talk on Shanakyle Bog scheduled for Saturday, May 27th from 11:30am-13:00pm. Shanakyle Bog is located near Parteen, Co. Clare and approximately 70 acres in extent of which 30 acres was subject to targeted restoration and rewetting work in 2021. The event which is led by Barry O’Loughlin will describe the process of peatland restoration techniques employed and showcase the results of a purpose built wildlife pond in grassland habitat for amphibians and invertebrates. The walk will also describe the ecosystem services that peatlands offer in addition to the scientific research the bog plays in terms of carbon sequestration and Sphagnum development. The event is free to attend. Due to car parking restrictions, places are limited.
