A Ballast Pit Walk to celebrate National Biodiversity Week!

Exploring the natural wonders of the large pit left from 19th century gravel mining, locally knows as the ballast pit.

We’ll be starting at the pedestrian lights on the Barnageeragh Road – looking not only at bumblebees but also learning about why it is such an incredible natural resource. For instance, there are 100 different species of wild bee in Ireland and 70% of them have been recorded here. There are rare pyramidal orchids, the very rare Small Blue Butterfly and lots more.

Come and see for yourself what the Ballast Pit has to offer to the explorer this month!

Free, but please secure a space for yourself in good time to be sure as numbers are limited!

The terrain is uneven. Please wear good walking shoes.

Meeting point: Pedestrian lights, Barnageeragh Road.
