It’s about communicating the importance of biodiversity and motivating people to play their part in protecting it. SUMMARY:Tackling algae bloom in rural lakes.
DESCRIPTION:Ollan Herr-‘Zero Waste Alliance Ireland’ will report on a pilot project where local communities separated human urine to remove phosphorus. \n\n\n\n\nIn light of ongoing threats from algae bloom to local lakes including Lough Melvin\, Ollan Herr from Zero Waste Alliance Ireland will show how local groups and communities can play their own small part in reducing algal blooms in nearby local surface waters. He will report on a pilot project from Dundalk that they are doing that. He will advocate how this type of project can help ensure that phosphorus contained in wastewater be prevented from entering local surface waters. \nA potential significant further step can be the removal and the treatment of separated urine to reduce emissions of phosphorus entering groundwater from septic tanks and cattle slurry. \nWith the closing of the Gulf of Hormuz\, governments around the world are realising just how dependent we all are on the burning of fossil fuels to produce fertilisers\, in particular\, phosphorus fertilisers. A long war with Iran will cause global phosphorus fertilisers to become ever more expensive and be a risk to food security. SUMMARY:Moths of the ecovillage: early morning moth exploration
DESCRIPTION:We will be opening a moth trap that has been out overnight and identifying\, recording and safely releasing the moths back into their natural habitat. There will be an opportunity to see the moths up close\, take photographs and hear a little about their flight times\, habitat and food plants. We will start at 9am and finish time is dependent on how many moths are in the trap. The session will begin with meeting at the Bank House in Ballydehob\, followed by a walk along Ballydehob Estuary to the 12 Arch Bridge\, where you will examine the physical and ecological processes that shape estuaries. Along the way\, we will explore the species that depend on these habitats and the growing pressures they face. There will be discussions on estuary conservation\, restoration\, and how to interact sustainably with these vital ecosystems. \nThe event is family friendly and children must be accompanied by an adult. We recommend dressing appropriately for this outdoor activity. \nStreamScapes is a registered charity\, empowering schools and communities across Ireland to explore\, understand\, and protect their local waterways and biodiversity. \nBioFest is an independent community festival which celebrates the biodiversity of West Cork\, through workshops and events with the people who are working for its better future. He will lead the tour\, providing insights into his approach to enhancing biodiversity and organic farming practices developed over more than a decade.\nHe pledged to plant native trees and conserve wildflower areas to support biodiversity as part of the Dingle COP ‘Conference Of the Parties\,’ a United Nations initiative that brings the world’s countries together in a united effort to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.\nSince this is an active farm\, please dress suitably and wear proper footwear.
